Today’s topic is on “Identifying Mental Blocks-Building Strategies to work through them.”
Before we dive off into our discussion today, I want to mention again, coming soon to my webpage will be two new additions. A Self-Motivated Life Power Up program and another program concerning Redesigning Your Body Health Pattern. I will not get into details on either of these programs that I created right now but stay tuned to my website and my other social media platforms for updates.
So, let’s talk mental blocks and strategies.
As we ease into this topic, I am again presenting a BASIC outline to help my listeners and those reading the transcript to be able to follow the content as I discuss each point.
The outlined points for “Identifying Mental Blocks-Building Strategies to work through them” begin with:
· Defining mental blocks?
· Next, I will discuss the types of mental blocks.
· Following this point leads to why mental blocks are present.
· The next point is why is there a need to build strategies to work through mental blocks.
· That point leads to where to start strategizing.
· Following this point is how to strategize?
· Lastly, I will discuss how to incorporate strategies where you live, work and play. ( where language works hand-in hand with the strategies you build in the form of communication).
WHAT ARE MENTAL BLOCKS?
Mental blocks are basically thought barriers that prohibit you from thinking clearly, not being able to finish a task; making impacted decisions whether those decisions are small or require a great deal of thought; it’s like a brick wall in front of you that you just can’t seem to clear away.
These same barriers are representative of mental blocks. Your focus shifts to overload and at some point your body will start to take on pressures from these symptoms if they are not resolved.
TYPES OF MENTAL BLOCKS
The types of mental blocks can vary quite a bit. However, one of the most common types that I have seen in my coaching practices is procrastination and low self-esteem. Yet, anxiety is still one of the most prevalent types and one other type that can be a little tricky, which is brain fog. Brain fog is remarkably diverse and hosts many reasons for it being present. So, I will not discuss details concerning brain fog for that reason. It does not expel the other types of mental blocks or the symptoms, however, if you feel your mental blocks go deeper and there is an uncomfortable feeling going on, then, the best thing to do is talk with your doctor. It is always a promising idea to bring symptoms like these up to your doctor for further assessment in case these mental blocks may be affecting your general health or mental health.
Now, for me as a writer and author I suffer sometimes with what is called writer’s block and find that if I take a day or a couple of days away from the environment, the outcome when I return is by far greater than my expectations! Remember this is my own personal experience and it is not meant to insinuate that you should do this for your own situations.
WHY ARE MENTAL BLOCKS PRESENT?
Mental blocks are common as it can happen to anyone.
Mental blocks present themselves when you are usually but not always under pressure or stress from a specific source (triggers). What that source is, I cannot tell you as you will have to find out where those triggers might be stemming from.
Some examples of triggers people have divulged in my practice is anxiety (a mechanism of how they cope). Anxiety is usually at the top of the list and then it follows suit on never being able to say “NO” to people, taking on extra work, never wanting to be the person to make a mistake, or fail.
Then, there are some people who need everything they do to be perfect; hence perfectionism, and there in itself presents the possibility for a crisis breakdown concerning thought and performance. Keep in mind that perfectionism runs from many different angles just like brain fog. Perfectionism does not have to just be about wanting things to be perfect, just like brain fog doesn’t have to always connect to just one health problem. However, you can become mentally overwhelmed as those tasks, decisions and others become more perplexing and difficult to handle.
So again, It helps to try to recognize early on what is causing your mental block so it does not fester into a deeper mental state (which may indicate a developing state of mental illness) requiring a much different approach.
Remember that mental blocks that appear to be temporary may not necessarily be an issue. It’s only when you notice that you are experiencing them more often than not that you should be intentional in focusing on why this is happening and seek medical attention.
WHY THE NEED TO BUILD STRATEGIES TO WORK THROUGH MENTAL BLOCKS?
The need to build strategies to work through mental blocks has a lot do with the prior examples given. More time spent on this type of thought affects the body and can affect your behavior.
For example, if there is increasing anxiety, your behavior could become more erratic where communication and connection is severely lacking.
This is part of where neurolinguistics programming appears as you may not be aware that mental blocks and language go hand-in hand. What you speak negatively of yourself, or a situation can limit your thoughts further and your language communications suffer. Thus, the more you do this, the more limited details of language become, and your mental block becomes a stacked affect where now, you are overwhelmed and that is where you seek to break down all the blocks in your way to reach positivity and even success as it applies to your specific case.
WHERE TO START STRATEGIZING?
Where to start strategizing begins with you. Look at yourself, observe home and work (for thought & behavior). Even where you play or take your leisure time, observe the type of language you choose, including your behavior during those moments.
As an example, and gaining more insight, ask yourself these questions and reflect on how you feel about your responses to them.
1. Do I take breaks at work whether I am working from home or at a brick & mortar location?
2. Do I ask for help or always try to handle a task alone?
3. Do I take critical assessment on the job as a positive or think of it as an attack on my character, etc.?
The point is identifying possible triggers that may be in part on yourself. The next part of this is to identify if it’s the environment and so forth. Either way, strategize to find a way to dissolve it and make it work better for you-less stress and anxiety which leads us to a workable application.
HOW TO STRATEGIZE?
Writing things down can help create a visual perspective of yourself and where you are currently.
In one of my discussions with Clients, it went back to the Client needing to create a T-Chart where you have a left and right side. In these types of life situations, a T-Chart is still a great tool to apply.
On your T-Chart, begin on the left side listing each life event - those areas that seem to trigger your mental block. Determine how stressful the issue might be. Give a number out of say, 1 through 10 with 10 being the highest determinant affecting you and place that number on the right side next to each life event. As you continue you will start to see what areas are most prevalent. From here, you can go as far as to break things down into categories and work a plan to decrease your mental blocks one stack at a time.
Remember to include how your language brings a cause and effect to each life event as well. So, in this case you may have a third column to your T-Chart.
HOW TO INCORPORATE STRATEGIES WHERE YOU LIVE, WORK AND PLAY
( where language works hand-in hand with the strategies you build in the form of communication).
The reason I tie all this to where you live, work and play is because mental blocks knows no boundaries. It can happen anywhere to anyone- from professionals to the lay-person, actors, those who play sports and so much more. You see, it’s the thought and behavior that is the pumping heart even in mental block territory.
Sometimes, keeping things simple can help with basic mental blocks that are not generated from other mental health problems. For example, reframing your thoughts and reconnecting to what brought you calm and peace before.
In this part of reframing, you change your choice of language from negative to positive (i.e., “I can” or “I will”) speaking.
Incorporating your strategies to better your mental blocks is in no way a failing moment because we all grow in learning about ourselves, our limits and being ok with what we cannot control.
You know how some people say “This might be a stupid question?.. There are no stupid questions. The question you ask may be helping the next person too because they too felt like you and refrained from asking. So, challenge yourself in this way to gain positive returns to mental blocks and render void the anxieties, low self-esteem periods, procrastination overloads that in relativity chokes your language and keeps you stagnated not just in a conceptual way but in how you cope as well.
Review where you started to strategize and how you developed a plan to strategize. Then take one step, one breath, and one day at a time.
CLOSING REMARKS
If you prefer not to work through your mental block alone sometimes to fully incorporate strategies you may desire help from an experienced life coach to help you work through your mental block if it deals with basic criteria. If it stems of a heightened threshold of possible mental health issues then a professional licensed mental health provider would be your best choice.
Personal development and change is of utmost importance as I can help you work on yourself in the following ways:
· One part of working on yourself is for you to be aware that you are not lost goods or damaged in any way. If you have issues with this, I can help you learn how to challenge that thought with a resolution.
· Another proclamation is to determine if you desire value and beneficial aspects in your life. If you are not sure how to curate this proclamation, again, I can help you with this.
· As your coach, working from an NLP perspective, is to separate intention or purpose behind an action from the action itself.
· Change comes with taking responsibility, being intentional and knowing where your resources are to help you.
